Roloff Family Dog Rocky Passes Away

Arguably the most popular 'Roloff' has died. Rocky, the Roloff family dog passed away today.

Matt Roloff made the following Facebook post:

"My best ole' friend slipped away from our heaven on Earth today. Rocky died peacefully right around noon.. outside on the grass right after making his morning rounds. He laid down on this patch of lawn (his favorite hang out) between the house and barn right in the middle of all the activity.. Jeremy went to pet him and realized he had passed away in this very spot.. Sadness has descended on Roloff Farm today. The entire family just happened to be home.. My old friend will be greatly missed. We Love you Rock."

Rocky the dog was featured in hundreds of episodes of Little People, Big World and was the central story line in several of the shows.

Pumpkin season guests always remarked on how friendly Rocky was, often climbing aboard the wagons for tours of the farm.

A couple of years ago Matt generated some controversy and outrage among some when the plot of one episode was Matt explaining how he wanted Rocky to have a dignified or a "manly" death -- detailing how his wish was for Jeremy to take Rocky to the barn and shoot him like they did in "the old days" on farms.

Matt often posted about Rocky on his Facebook page. Those "Rocky" posts often garnered the most attention and positive comments from fans.

While Matt spread the news of Rocky's death on Facebook, Jacob posted a picture of rocky with the caption "Just an old friend". Jacob then went onto tweet about video games and the TV Show "Family Guy".

Jeremy instagrammed a picture of a person with a leaf over his face and captioned it "Facial Recognition". Jeremy made no mention of Rocky.

Amy posted on twitter - at first she was trying to keep it secret because they are filming the event, but said because Matt told everyone, yes Rocky died this morning.

Amy Roloff CF ‏@amyroloffCF
Kind of a sad day at Roloff Farm. More info Later date

Since we are filming we usually aren't suppose to post details. Since Matt has - yes our good ole dog friend Ricky died this morning. Sad

sorry Rocky dies this morning Since Matt has posted this already - our family sad day was Rocky our good ole dog died today. He was a good ole sport will miss him

Amy also posted on her Facebook Fan Page much later:

"We were filming today and normally we are not supposed to post something when a filming moment happened. Since Matt already did hopefully it'll be ok. This part is always difficult for me. Rocky has been such a part of our lives and on our show. So you kind of know him too. It was a sad day today at Roloff Farms. Our beloved good ole dog Rocky suddenly passed away at the Farm. He's been with us for about 13 years. He loved being with people, even with all of the people who came during pumpkin season. He died his way - on the farm in the grass between our house and first barn. Jeremy found him this morning and came in shockingly to tell us 'He's gone'! We are glad he was a part of our family and sad he's gone. He's happy now running around without pain. Sure will miss him! Thank you everyone."

Later in the day, Molly tweeted
"buried the old friend today."

Spiritswander sends our deepest condolences.

Poor Rocky. The one Roloff that wasn't stuck up.

So sad. How could anybody not like Rocky. Probably for the best. Rocky was looking in rough shape.

Greg said...

Matt must be elated. Even Jacob had tweeted over a year ago that Matt said he was ready for Rocky to be dead.

And Jacob tweeted about wanting to get a new dog whether Rocky dies or not.

Peter L said...

Finally Matt gets his "Rocky Dies" episode so they can exploit people's emotions.

Christine said...

I find it very deceiving. Matt tries to act like they are such animal lovers because he knows fans like pets.

Fans are probably more upset about Rocky dying than the Roloffs.

Animal lovers don't do things like throw cats. Like Amy once said, the Roloffs are not pet people. Maybe the most truthful statement Amy has ever said.

Natalie said...

Yeah, I felt bad for them until I saw Jacob posting about Call of Duty. Wow, he's really broken up.

Jeremy's thanking people for kissing his ass and praising his awesome picture taking ability. He's really devastated too [/sarcasm off].

Trish said...

RIP Rocky!

Lacey said...

They Roloffs neglected him so much.

Jason said...

All Rocky's death means to Matt is a good episode and some more money.

Ashley said...

Very sad news about the nicest Roloff! No question about that.

Jan said...

Nice dog, rude family.

Tina said...

Spirits doesn't even need to mention Molly because she's the most stuck up out of all of them.

Pam said...

I think Matt always loved Rocky even if they aren't really "animal people".

Rap541 said...

I'm just glad this didn't involve a shot gun.

Megan B said...

Anyone wonder how long he really laid motionless before he was discovered? He was pretty obviously a neglected pet his whole life; why would he be more noticed in death?

Michelle said...

Not that long ago, Jacob said he would ride Rocky like a horse.

It made me cringe thinking what the poor dog went through.

He's in a better place. It's always sad when a good animal dies.

Carly said...

It says everything that Amy wanted to keep it quiet because it's film material.

There's no hope for these people.

Bonnie said...

Amy's post shows that she's worse than Matt.

Someone sounds a little annoyed that Matt spoiled a precious plot.

Timothy said...

Jacob admitted they filmed it and that it was the only actual real scene they've done in a long time.

"lol actually it was the first actual reality scene in a while"

Rap541 said...

Bonnie - what was Amy's post? I'm not seeing anything on her official facebook

Bonnie said...

Rap, Spirits has it in the article.

She used her charity twitter page. A series of tweets.

Basically she started out saying it was a sad day but wouldn't say why.

Then she said they aren't supposed to tell details when they are filming (the dead dog/reaction) but since Matt already opened his big mouth, yeah Rocky died. They're sad.

I know Amy speak. Pissed that Matt blew episode details.

Wendy said...

Aw, sad. The only Roloff without an attitude.

Rap541 said...

Ah silly me not reading :)

Yes, I sense she wasn't happy about it.

angel said...

rip rocky

Jill said...

Ugh. The Roloffs have no class.

I think we all know they were waiting for this moment and immediately thought it would make for a good filming subject.

Deanna said...

Matt posting about Rocky almost makes Matt likable.

Carol said...

At least Matt had the decency to tell people what happened as opposed to weasel Amy "everything is about story lines and ratings" Roloff. Disgusting Amy. Disgusting

Rap541 said...

Yeah and Matt was a saint for removing posts that suggesting he wasn't dead when his faux heart attack special aired?

Sorry, Matt wins the "delights in making assy decisions" award hands down.

I knew it was a farce but some of his actual fans were genuinely worried. That sure trumps not telling us they're filming the dog dying for an episode. Oh, and if there's money to be made, Matt wants a camera on it so we're sure to see Matt sobbing for the camera how much he loved the dog he wanted his son to kill three years earlier to make his "Old Yeller" fantasy come true(in an episode)... the same dog they knew had an eye problem and didn't take to a vet for a year (in an episode) the dog that was yanked by it's neck into a car (filmed for Matt's profit) and the same dog that Matt teehee'd on his facebook over how cutesy cute it was that it was locked into a closet for days until it lost weight (also filmed for Matt's profit)

Sorry, I will throw Amy a bone on this one. And frankly I am not exactly delighted that the dog dying meant calling the camera crew but then, the Roloffs do need something to whore themselves out on. It's just a dog so apparently its time for the Roloffs to whore the dog's death out for money.

Becca said...

All the Roloffs love attention and sympathy.

Buzzy said...

I don't understand why anyone gets a pet they don't really want.I've watched this show several times, but wasn't aware of mistreatment/neglect and comments of shooting the dog on past episodes. If in fact these things are true....I'm saddened that they would treat an animal with lack of compassion. R.I.P. Rocky Boy.

Mike P. said...

Jesus called. Rocky answered.

Katie said...

I feel bad for Rocky, but the Roloffs shouldn't be allowed to get more pets.

They don't know how to care for animals and I fear what they are like behind closed doors.

Hell, if they throw cats and take pics of that, what are they doing that they don't take pictures of?

Olivia said...

Rocky dies and it's business as usual for the Roloffs. They suck.

Poor Rocky.

Leigh said...

Amy referred to it as "a filming moment". I'm not surprised.

Brandon said...

Rap, to be honest with you, and I'm not one to defend Matt, although I think both Matt and Amy always are ready to use material that will get them more shows, I do genuinely think Matt cared for Rocky more than Amy.

I don't think Amy is at all an animal person and I find her posts about the subject to be trying very hard to sound like she's upset...but she isn't that affected because animals don't mean much to her.

BeckyM said...

Why be surprised this was filmed? So was Jacob's accident. Par for the course. Exploit. Make Money. That's why reality folk are called reality-ho's.

It's not a question if you are a ho, it's just a question of how much money it takes to capsulate the old joke.

May Rocky return to the Wheel and be brought back higher due to the suffering and neglect he endured this time around.

Rap541 said...

Brandon to be honest, I think we're arguing two sides of the same coin. I don't think Amy is a pet person either.

I just think they're both assy over how they're handling this and how they handle the whole "private vs public" nonsense. For starters, they live together... in theory. Really, they can't sit down and make a decision together on how the dog's death will be revealed? (This inability to be on the same page is telling me a great deal about their marriage) So they didn't have to do it this way. Second... at the end of the day, no one was too upset to call the camera crew, and no one felt too upset to not post about it. My point to Carol is that yes, Amy considered it a storyline and avoided being honest but we've got numerous examples of Matt doing the same exact thing, teasing a storyline and intentionally removing posts to yank peoples emotions over much bigger issues than a dead dog.

Unlike some animal lovers I know, I doubt ANY of the Roloffs are or were in weeping hysterics over the dog. Do I think Matt liked the dog more than Amy? Yes. Do I think he's milking it for all he's worth so he can play poor widdle Matt? Oh yeah. Do I think he was the first to call the camera crew so he could stage a little scene over the dog? Yup.

Kylie said...

I doubt anyone was that emotionally devastated.

I get the feeling fans who love their pets feel a lot worth than the dumb Roloffs.

Melanie said...

Since Jacob has already been talking about it, how long before they get a new puppy.

All to be filmed of course.

The big "Rocky is Dead" episode. Then they can stretch it out to a debate about getting a puppy. Then the search. Then bringing it home.

They might be able to milk the Rocky's death into a whole season of shows.

Crystal said...

Rocky seemed very unRoloff like

Gina said...

I wonder if they should have put Rocky "down" (the humane way!).

He had cancer. Hopefully he wasn't in too much pain before he died.

I honestly wonder if they didn't because it wouldn't have been as dramatic of a filming moment.

Ano27 said...

Ever wonder if maybe the crew was already there when they found him? Matt said the whole family "happened" to be home so maybe they could've been filming some kind of reunion shenanigans? There's really no way to tell either way until we watch the ep. Maybe not even then. In any case, RIP Rocky.

Cathy said...

I don't see the difference. They've obviously been waiting for a long time to be able to do the death scene or the aftermath. They could have decided that maybe hours after poor Rocky died they weren't going to exploit it as episode fodder.

Nothing on the show is real. For Godsakes, Matt and Amy are the producers!

Brandon, you're totally right about Amy.

The next day Amy spent it partying and boating on the Williamette river sipping drinks and having a great time for her "charity".

She strategically did not mention that on her Facebook fan page, instead posting to her upset fans about how much she misses Rocky.

So sad for Rocky i sure hope he was not let to be in pain for the sake of a few bucks on a episode for these people that would be soooo wrong. rip rock

Matt is probably going to use Rocky's body in a BarBQ next weekend.

I started watching this because I wonder how little people survive in this world.
The answer is simple, just isolate yourself on a fantasy farm.
lets see how hard life is for these spoiled people,
spend hundreds of thousands on massive house renovations.
amy in one episode forget her digital camera at home so she just went out and bought another one!
mat buys 2 mercedes
no one on the show works.
mat decides to rebuild a vw beetle and just gives it to a car restoration place to do all the work.
he complains he has to wait in line to the eiffel tower so he gets pushed to the front of the line(no doubt the film crew with had some influence).
I cant image how anybody let alone a little person can learn anything from these spoiled brats!!

You have nothing nice to say... why are you here, spewing your hate?

Shouldn't you "shut it"?

I mean, if the correct response to seeing something or reading something you don't like is to "shut it"... shouldn't you be sitting silent?

And not publically noting how wrong people are, judging people publically, and making it very clear that in your judgement, this is all why the world is so messed up? Come on Janice, explain why you have the right to judge and to silence others? Explain why you're being mature and decent by telling others they're wrong and that they need to "shut it".

Janice Stephens said...

If you got nothing nice to say don't say it at all oh yeah and everybody is just commenting lovely words , oh yeah I'm spewing hate ? Who's judging now

Rap541 said...

Janice, I'm not the one who decided to sit in judgement here, now am I? In fact, that was you! I believe you were telling people to "shut it" - of course you've done the coward's move and removed your post.

If you want to discuss the Roloffs from a positive point of view, feel free. In fact, Spirit might like someone presenting an alternate view. But what you did, Janice, is you came here on your high horse telling people to "shut it" because you didn't like what you were reading. That's judging - something *you* say you're against. Then you noted how people should simply be quiet if they didn't like something.

If my pointing out the hypocrisy of judging others as having wrong opinions and insisting the only valid way to handle an opinion you don't like is to be silent is upsetting to you... well tough. You wanted to pick a fight, and got called on your nonsense. You didn't have anything nice to say and said it anyway, you got to pass judgement and you somehow think you're taking the high road? Please, you were judging and hating, and insisting everyone else follow rules that you yourself won't abide by. Remember, your point here was "if you don't have something nice to say, shut it". Don't complain when you're called out for not following your own advice.

sassenach said...

I wonder if Matt and Jeremy are disappointed that they waited too long and missed the chance to take Rocky out and shoot him?

Will said...

I'm with Matt on his thoughts of putting down Rocky if he had gotten to a point of suffering and not make him live in pain and die of malnutrition because he couldnt or didn't want to get to the food or water dish. It's a humane thing to do and i've had to do it with a few of my beloved pets. In Rocky's case, it appears he went peacefully and didn't need help.

Brandon said...

Will, you do know the whole story, right?

Matt's form of putting Rocky out of his suffering (3 years ago) was to send Jeremy, a rifle and a shotgun out to the barn and kill Rocky that way.

It's not the 1930s anymore. The humane way to put end an animals suffering when they are dying is to take them to the vet and let them do with an injection

sassenach said...

Brandon
I agree with you

BeckyM said...

Shooting is cheaper than going to the vet. I guess it also gives the resident farmer satisfaction to see his pet's brains blown out.

So sorry for Matt that he missed his big chance. Of course, he go to film Rocky dying in the sun, so there you go. Always a way to ride that gravy train right Matt? Right Amy? Right "kids"?

I had a feeling something had happened to Rocky by the way they set up the new episode coming preview. Hoping people tune in to see if its Matt the Dr. is telling he sorry. Is it matt or Maybe Rocky? I personally will not watch that episode. I am sorry and saddened Rocky is gone. He was such a good old boy. So handsome and sweet, but I don't want to see Rocky passed away and the Roloffs having the nerve to film that. Making rating from the passing of their faithful, loyal, family member. It's sick and PLEASE I hope people that agree will not watch this episode as well. It should have been a private moment NOT filmed. Roloffs you should be ashamed. I prefer to remember Rocky in the cute little things he did and the complete dedication and devotion he had for Matt. I love all animals and the Roloffs were lucky to have had him, but don't exploit him for you ratings.

The death of a good, old family pet is always a sad thing...it's hard to conceive that many of you do not feel that the Roloff's cared...I believe they did and feel saddened that they are portrayed so poorly...if you didn't enjoy the show, why did you watch...every family has it's ups and downs and they are no different...regardless...I will miss seeing Rocky on the show.

Rap541 said...

Roloff friendly fan - Its hard to believe that there was much concern when Matt proudly sounded off how funny it was that Rocky was *really* locked in a room fore three days and lost weight because of it. Sorry - pet owners who are genuinely concerned for their animals don't find that funny.

Matt also loves the dog so much he wanted to kill it via Jeremy and a shotgun because thats what he thinks people do. While I don't lend Jake's twitter a lot of credence, there's at least one tweet that indicated Matt was ready for the dog to be dead.

Also, I really can't shake the feeling that Matt was delighted that the dog died during filming and I wonder, out of the eight episodes, how many will be about the dog dying.

If you don't enjoy reading here, please explain why you *are* reading a website you find too negative and why you're choosing to post when you clearly feel that people who don't like something shouldn't engage it in anyway? The "if you don't like it" arguement applies to you as well, explain your reasoning here.

That poor dog was not doing well 3 years ago and should have been taken to a vet and peacefully put down at that time instead of suffering all this time. I am done watching this show.

I recorded and today watched the show. I loved Rocky and I am very sad that he died. Brings back the raw feeling of losing a pet.

Rocky was a good boy. I do not think he would have lived such a long life (13) had they not taken care of him.

I wonder how much gets cut out of the show?

I know I would be very angry if they did neglect him. Not everyone is cut out to be a pet owner. I know my dog is like my child and I would do anything on this earth to give him a healthy and long life.

I hope the Roloffs would do the same. If not, I hope they never get another pet.

Rocky was a loving, loyal pet to that family. After he was diagnosed with cancer and the vet told Matt and Amy that the cancer was rapidly growing and that Rocky was in a lot of discomfort (PAIN)--Were they giving him pain meds to make him more comfortable? I certainly hope so.
I do believe he was well taken care of as I do not believe he would have lived to be 13. And yes Matt seemed to be the only family member who really loved the dog. RIP Rocky over the Rainbow Bridge where you are running happily!

I don't know how anyone can judge on how someone grieves. I am sure they all had their private moments. The loss of a family member affects each person differently and should be respected as such. Just because the cameras didn't film an emotional break down does mean there wasn't one. If they did film and show the family break down you all would be commenting negatively about that. The only people you should be judging is yourselves. Are you happy with the way you responded in your post, I'll let you be the judge!

Wow..some of these comments are just plain ignorant. IT doesn't "say a lot" that Amy was apprehensive about posting it because of filming. All it says is that she was worried about being SUED for breach of contract just for posting that their dog died to people who have no business needing to know right away. As for "it is obviously he was neglected" wow...you people really ARE ignorant of Reality TV, aren't you?

Watched tonight's episode of Rocky passing away. I just got the feeling it was all staged. Was he euthanized and then taken home and placed in the yard? I sure hope that wasn't the case because that would make the TLC Producers of Little People Big World and The Roloffs, rating mongers! Whether that was the case or not, I did not see the real grief that a family feels when they lose a beloved pet. I know there are a few episodes of Little People Big World left but I will not be watching them! Be at peace Rocky. You were loved by so many.

I personally favor the way Rocky's death was filmed. The viewing public who adored Rocky got to say good-bye to him through the eye of the camera rather than hearing a report. With my tears, I felt as though I paid respect to this beautiful, wonderful pet, Rocky in a way he deserved. Rocky's burial service and site was beautiful, and he deserved it. However, I was taken aback with the luke-warm sadness the Roloff showed at Rocky's passing. Maybe they knew that I was home watching the show and crying enough for all of them. And to Rocky I say, "Bye Sweet Rocky. My dog Sarge is waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge. Go have a fun romp with him through the wild flowers of heaven."

Just watched the show today. Sad to see Rocky dies...the really sad part is I had showed more emotion that any of the Roloffs? I didn't see one tear and everything was a matter of fact. "Rockys dead"...wait we didn't get that, cue Jeremy to come back in and say Rockys Dead.

The little twin was on his phone when they were burying Rocky. Jeez where was the love!!??

I was watching the program & was so sad to see tha Rocky had died. I think Rocky was treated like one of the family & I send my condolences to the Roloff family. Love your show & RIP Rocky-will miss you on the show.

I don't think Rocky should have been filmed at all, period! Certainly we all grieve differently, but it's personal. The public did not need to have closure for this. The story itself would have been enough. Shame, shame, shame on TLC and the Roloffs for taking such a sweet dog and making a rating sound bite out of it. In regards to changing the channel I will be doing just that!!! I am disgusted!!!

I was extremely upset over the episode of Rocky's death. I felt
as though the family really didn't care for their dog. No real emotions. If this part of the episode was really not scripted then they are pretty heartless. I cried more than any of them.... anything for ratings...

It is interesting to read these negative comments about how people view the reaction to Rocky's death by the family. As I was watching the scene in which he is discovered dead, it struck me that none of them rushed over to him when they saw him laying there. Amy stood far away and Rocky was just sort of stared at by Amy, Matt and Jeremy for far too long. It seemed so cold for people who say they loved their dog. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it gave me an odd feeling to watch them not run to who they viewed as another 'family member.'

I didn't see them shed a tear...

He should have been put down instead of being in pain. Then he died by himself.

I am disgusted by every single comment I've read here. All of you people are heartless losers who have nothing better to do than comment about what you do not know. Shame on all of you! The Roloffs have opened their home to viewers for all these years and this is what they get? One word...KARMA :) RIP Rocky....he was clearly loved and taken care of to have lived as long as he did!

Becky - Matt himself said on his facebook that the dog they all loved soooooo much was locked in a closet for three days without food and water and visibly lost weight because of it.

Becky - is that how you LOVE your dog? Is that even acceptable for someone to do to your pets?

Jake Roloff on the show said they didn't feed their dog for a week, once. Is that how you love your dog, Becky? Because you're calling us all haters, right? Because the Roloffs love the dog they starved, locked in a closet and this is what loving pet owners do and should be praised for? Right?

I'll agree with you on one thing - I don't even like dogs, but I hope the karma fairy one day shows the Roloffs what it's like to be locked in a closet without food or water for three days so someone else can make money off it. Thats how Matt treated his beloved dog.

I stopped watching that show as I thought they treated Rocky like second class. She definitely didn't care for his company. Hmf
